Forgettable Cup exit needs to become more forgettable

People in football often say that nobody remembers a losing semifinalist. That may be something of a myth, but it’s true that the Vertu Trophy quarterfinal will be forgotten by almost everyone who isn’t a Luton Town fan. To make it even more forgettable has to be the priority for Argyle now.

People in football often say that nobody remembers a losing semifinalist. That may be something of a myth, but it’s true that the Vertu Trophy quarterfinal will be forgotten by almost everyone who isn’t a Luton Town fan.

There may have been some late drama as Plymouth Argyle lost 2–1 to an 89th-minute penalty, but there wasn’t much else for the travelling supporters to cheer. Losing to a team that had lost in the previous round but had been reinstated was also a little predictable.

And so, a trip to Wembley has slipped away. Yet if that disappointment helps keep alive the prospect of another, more significant journey to the capital in May, perhaps not too many will mind.

Argyle arrived in Bedfordshire in fine spirits after three straight, comprehensive wins—capped by that memorable 5–2 victory over League One leaders Cardiff City on Saturday—and belief was high.
