We have probably all been there – watching a game that we are neutral about but sitting next to a friend –whether at the stadium, pub or sofa– who supports one of the teams.
I remember watching an Everton match in the past with a good mate who was a massive blue and he was one of those who, every time an opposing player collected the ball, was convinced they were going to score.
Everton were winning 2-0 and it was clear that the game was as good as won. There was little to no chance that the other team, I can’t remember who that was, were going to score twice, they had simply run out of ideas and belief and the last quarter of an hour was a formality.
That, however, was not the way my friend saw it. It was only in the final moments that he started to relax. In fact, he was one of those who almost preferred watching games in which Everton fell behind because the worst had happened and then he could relax with that burden lifted and now supporting his team in their efforts to get back in the game.
