Bring back the Janner Song

Yes, the Janner Song is a bit cheesy, it is not exactly cutting-edge but it is different and it is fun and it is local and it gets people involved. In a football scene that is increasingly corporate, it offers a refreshing alternative and a glimpse of something uniquely Plymouth.

I may have arrived a little later than usual –the cold meant there wasn’t much motivation to get to the press box early and sit around – but there was still time to hear the famous Janner song.

There was some dark and brooding music playing when the teams were messing about before kick-off. I thought then, as I looked at the time on my laptop, that they were cutting it a bit short to get the tune on. A couple of broadcasters were also starting to get confused too as the song is their cue to get ready.

But then the game just started. If anything, it sparked the home team into action with Lorent Tolaj lobbing the ball against the bar inside the first minute. Perhaps Burton had talked about how to deal with the tune and didn’t know what to do when it never happened.

I asked a couple of people at the club and they said that perhaps it was seen as a “bit of a Schuey thing” but were not sure.
