Sometimes it is easy to forget that Tom Cleverley is still young, just 36. In an alternative universe he is still playing, perhaps sitting a bit deeper and dictating play. Given the fitness levels these days, there could have been a couple more seasons to come.
There are times when his relative youth is evident. After the 3-0 win over Burton at the start of the month, he talked of the visitors having to deal with injuries and missing their star attackers.
“Not that I have much sympathy, we have had the same issues,” he said with a smile — a boyish one — and suddenly he looked like a fresh-faced young, coach.
Whatever else this season turns out to be, it has already been a roller-coaster: from the expectations at the start of the season with talk of 'top six budgets' to the dreadful start, the turnaround and then another dip, culminating in that 3-0 loss at home to Northampton when relegation really did seem possible, perhaps even probable.
