On Thursday, new loanee Wes Harding sat in the media room at Home Park and talked of a push for the playoffs. The defender gave the impression that he hadn’t come west from Millwall just to spend the rest of the season in mid-table obscurity –although given the situation just a few weeks ago, that wouldn’t be a disaster.
There’s nothing wrong with optimism and the message coming out of the club is that a push for a top six spot is the objective. It has to be given that there isn't much of an alternative as long as the playoffs are even just a theoretical possibility.
Not just that but being in the hunt adds meaning and drama to the rest of the campaign and also gives a platform to build on for next time around when the first half of the season should not be quite so bad as this one.
Nobody knows what is going to happen in the next 17 games but it is safe to say that something will happen, a team will emerge from the mid-table pack to challenge.
